Buying an Ex-Demo Forklift: 9 Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Buying an ex-demo forklift is one of the smartest ways to get near-new equipment at a significantly lower price, but only if you ask the right questions before you commit. Ex-demo machines vary enormously in age, usage, condition, and what's actually included in the sale. A truck that looks immaculate on the outside can have a tired battery, a patchy service history, or a compliance gap that costs you far more than you saved on the purchase price.

This guide gives you the nine questions that separate a genuinely good ex-demo deal from one that will create headaches down the line.

What Is an Ex-Demo Forklift?

An ex-demo forklift is a machine that has been used by a dealer or manufacturer for demonstration, trials, or short-term loan purposes, rather than being sold new to an end customer. Ex-demo forklifts are typically low-hours machines that offer near-new reliability at a used price. The key difference from a standard used forklift is that ex-demo trucks are usually well-maintained, properly documented, and often still within the manufacturer's original warranty period.

That said, not all ex-demo forklifts are equal. Here are the nine questions you need answered before signing anything.

Question 1: How Many Hours Are on the Clock?

The hour meter is the single most important indicator of an ex-demo forklift's remaining useful life. A genuine low-hours demo machine will typically show fewer than 500 hours, and many will be under 200. Electric forklifts generally last 8,000 to 12,000 hours depending on maintenance, so a 200-hour machine has the vast majority of its working life ahead of it.

Ask to see the onboard meter yourself, not just a figure quoted verbally. If the seller cannot show you the live meter reading, treat this as a red flag.

Question 2: Does It Come with a Full Service History?

Hours alone don't tell the whole story. A forklift with 800 hours and complete, documented service records can be a better buy than a 200-hour machine with no paperwork at all. When examining a used or ex-demo electric forklift, ask to see complete service records. A forklift with higher hours but documented, professional servicing from a reputable provider could outlast a lower-hour machine that's been neglected. Missing service records should make you cautious.

For an ex-demo forklift, you should expect to receive a full service history from new, including any pre-delivery inspection (PDI) records and any maintenance carried out during the demonstration period.

Question 3: Has It Had a Pre-Delivery Inspection?

A Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) is a thorough check carried out by a qualified technician before the machine is handed over, covering all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and safety systems. It is not the same as a LOLER examination; it is a comprehensive operational check confirming the truck is ready to work from day one.

At iLift, every EP forklift, including ex-demo models, undergoes a full PDI before delivery. Every lithium-ion forklift undergoes a thorough Pre-Delivery Inspection to ensure optimal performance, safety, and reliability from day one, arriving fully tested, quality-checked, and ready to work. If a supplier cannot confirm a PDI has been carried out, ask why, and consider whether the saving is worth the risk of an unknown mechanical issue.

Question 4: Is There a Valid LOLER Certificate?

This is non-negotiable. Under LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998), forklifts must be thoroughly examined by a qualified, independent inspector every six months. This is a legal requirement, not optional.

Any ex-demo forklift offered for sale should come with a current LOLER thorough examination certificate. If the certificate has expired or cannot be produced, you will need to arrange a fresh examination before the truck can be put to work, so factor this into your total cost. Every ex-demo forklift at iLift is LOLER safety certified and dealer-approved before being offered for sale.

Question 5: What Warranty Is Included?

This is the question most buyers forget to ask, and one of the most important. Warranty terms on ex-demo forklifts vary considerably. Some suppliers offer a full manufacturer's warranty carried over from new; others provide a limited dealer warranty only.

For EP lithium-ion forklifts purchased through iLift, the 5-year battery warranty is included even on ex-demo models, providing meaningful long-term protection on the most expensive component of an electric truck. Ask specifically:

  • What does the warranty cover: parts, labour, or both?

  • How long does it run from the date of purchase?

  • Does the battery carry a separate warranty?

  • Who do you contact if something goes wrong?

Question 6: What Is the Battery's State of Health?

For electric forklifts, the battery is the heart of the machine and the most expensive single component to replace. Battery life typically ranges from 1,500 to 2,000 charge cycles, which translates to approximately five to seven years with proper care. Before buying, ask for a battery health report or diagnostic printout showing the current state of health (SoH) as a percentage of original capacity.

On a low-hours ex-demo machine, you'd expect to see battery health above 95%. Anything below 85% on a supposedly nearly-new truck warrants further investigation. For EP lithium-ion forklifts, this data can be pulled directly from the battery management system (BMS), and a reputable supplier should provide it without hesitation.

Question 7: Has the Capacity Plate Been Updated for Any Attachments?

If the ex-demo forklift has been fitted with any attachment, such as a sideshift, fork positioner, or extension, the capacity plate must have been updated to reflect the derated safe working load. When you fit an attachment, the original rated capacity is no longer valid. The attachment manufacturer or a trained engineer must provide derated capacity data, and this must be displayed on the truck. It is a legal requirement under LOLER and PUWER.

If the truck carries an attachment but the capacity plate hasn't been updated, this is both a compliance failure and a safety risk. Confirm the plate reflects the truck's actual configuration before signing.

Question 8: What Exactly Is Included in the Sale Price?

Ex-demo listings can vary enormously in what's bundled into the headline price. Before comparing figures between suppliers, confirm whether the following are included:

  • Battery and charger

  • Delivery to your site

  • Pre-delivery inspection

  • LOLER certificate

  • Warranty documentation

  • Any standard attachments (sideshift, fork positioner)

At iLift, every EP electric forklift, including ex-demo stock, comes with the battery included as standard, with no hidden extras to source before you can get to work. Browse current ex-demo EP forklifts at iLift or contact the team for a full breakdown of what's covered.

Question 9: Is Ongoing Service Support Available After the Sale?

Buying an ex-demo forklift from a dealer who disappears after the transaction is a false economy. You need access to qualified technicians, genuine parts, and a service team who knows the machine. This is particularly relevant for lithium-ion EP equipment, where software updates, BMS diagnostics, and battery management require manufacturer-trained engineers.

iLift offers flexible service and maintenance contracts on all EP equipment, including ex-demo purchases, covering scheduled maintenance, priority breakdown response, and LOLER thorough examinations to keep you fully compliant throughout the machine's working life.

FAQ: Buying an Ex-Demo Forklift

Is buying an ex-demo forklift a good idea?

Yes, for most businesses it represents excellent value, particularly when buying from an authorised dealer who can provide full service history, a valid LOLER certificate, and a meaningful warranty. The saving versus new can be substantial with minimal real-world difference in condition or remaining lifespan.

How many hours should an ex-demo forklift have?

A genuine ex-demo machine should have fewer than 500 hours on the clock, with many under 200. Above 500 hours, the truck is typically classified as used rather than ex-demo.

Do ex-demo forklifts come with a warranty?

It depends on the supplier. Always ask specifically what warranty is included, how long it runs, and whether it covers the battery separately. iLift's EP ex-demo forklifts include a 5-year battery warranty as standard.

Can I negotiate on an ex-demo forklift price?

Usually yes, particularly on older demo stock or machines that have been on the lot for a while. However, focus on the total package, including warranty, PDI, LOLER certification, and service support, rather than simply the lowest headline price.

What's the difference between ex-demo and used?

An ex-demo forklift has been used specifically for dealer demonstrations or trials, typically for a short period with professional care and full documentation. A used forklift has been operated by an end customer and may have a more varied usage and maintenance history.

Buy with Confidence

Buying an ex-demo forklift offers a genuine route to near-new EP equipment at a materially lower cost, provided you ask the right questions before you sign. Work through the nine points above, confirm the documentation is in order, and ensure the warranty and service support reflect the long-term commitment you're making.

iLift's ex-demo EP electric forklifts are LOLER certified, PDI inspected, and come with battery included and a 5-year battery warranty as standard. View current ex-demo stock or get in touch with the iLift team to discuss your requirements.
